GEORGIA’S LIBERTY MOVEMENT AND THE DEATH PENALTY: DOES IT ALIGN WITH CONSERVATIVE AND LIBERTARIAN VALUES?
Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty (CCATDP), a national network of conservatives and libertarians questioning the alignment of capital punishment with their principles, will be the featured topic at the August 8th meeting of the Atlanta chapter of the America’s Future Foundation (more details below).
“No jury in Georgia has issued a death sentence in over three years, so it’s fair to say our state is changing when it comes to capital punishment,” said Jen Maffessanti, the AFF Atlanta Chapter Chair and the event organizer. “Our politically conservative state is turning away from the death penalty, and this discussion will be a great opportunity to learn more about this shift.”
In January, Georgia Conservatives Concerned About the Death Penalty was launched. It is one of 12 state-based conservative groups around the country questioning the death penalty.
“As a longtime Georgia resident who has been active in Republican politics, I have witnessed a remarkable change in the death penalty discussion within Georgia in just the past few years,” said Marc Hyden the national coordinator of CCATDP and a former aide to the Georgia Senate President Pro Tempore. “I visit red states across the country and – just like in Georgia – conservatives are coming to the realization that capital punishment runs contrary to our core shared values of limited government, fiscal responsibility, and valuing life.”
The event will take place on August 8th at Whitehall Tavern located at 2391 Peachtree Road in Atlanta. The presentation will be preceded by a happy hour at 6:30pm and then start at 7:30.
