Ep. 83 – Why Facebook Suddenly "Cares" About Children & Democracy

Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Twitter, and Google have been in the news lately acknowledging how damaging their technology is to children and to democracy. Do the admissions made by the tech giants reflect a genuine concern about the impact their products have on society, or are they merely teeing up a pre-planned solution that will result in the government taking control of social media and ultimately the entire Internet? Episode originally aired on WSB 750 Atlanta on January 20th, 2017.

Cracking the Code on the Facebook Overhaul & more…Today's Twitter Trip #ReadMyTwips

Facebook Will Tear Down Its Model Just To Build A More Controlled Newsfeed

I’ve been puzzling over the recent spate of news stories that highlight facebook’s as well as Apple’s affect on society, youth, mental health, etc. As a parent, my concerns over these issues came on with a vengeance as soon as I gave my kids phones (I was a holdout and waited until they were a whopping twelve years old!) So why is this issue emerging from all corners at once–parents, activist investors, executives, news agencies, etc? When a meme bombards me like this, I look for the agenda, and I think I found it in today’s Wall Street Journal.
Long ago, a family friend cautioned me against Scientology. She told me they had methods to make you vulnerable and captive, specifically, they invited you in, told you what was wrong with you, broke you down completely, then built you back up according to their goal of controlling you, your mind, your opinions, your behaviors, your loyalties, etc. I don’t know if this is how Scientology actually operates, but the method she described seemed rather clever and effective. When I read this article about facebook, I saw a similar pattern in the works.
Facebook plans to break down users’ connections to their newsfeeds as they are, which is how they emerged organically, then build them from the ground up to conform with pre-approved sources. If you still think Google, facebook, etc., were purely entrepreneurial ventures that got no advantage from government money, government think tanks, publicly funded university research programs, winner-picking incubators and the like, then you might think these companies should behave as they wish, but even a cursory bit of research demonstrates the biggest of Big Tech has been intertwined with government surveillance and censorship operations (and more), from the beginning.
Here are the passages in the facebook article that caught my eye and, I think, revealed the agenda….
Facebook to Overhaul How It Presents News in Feed
Social-media site would favor posts by users and friends and rank journalism outlets by credibility

Under planned changes announced Thursday, Facebook will favor posts, photos and videos in the news feed that are shared and discussed among users and their friends over those posted by businesses and news organizations—a likely blow to companies that rely on Facebook to reach customers. The company also is weighing another major change that could eventually elevate media outlets deemed more trustworthy compared with publishers considered less credible, people familiar with the matter said….
The other potential change would involve ranking news outlets based on some measures of credibility, such as public polling about news outlets, and whether readers are willing to pay for news from particular publishers, the people familiar with the matter said. Such variables would inform the Facebook algorithms that determine which publishers’ posts are pushed higher in the feed, one of the people said.
Such a move would thrust Facebook into an even more active role in deciding what content is acceptable on its site—a role that makes some publishers uneasy. The company hasn’t decided whether to proceed with that shift, and it may choose not to do so.

And in case you didn’t know…

“Facebook has an enormous amount of power and agency when it comes to deciding if publishers will thrive or not thrive,” said Emily Bell, director of the Tow-Knight Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University.
A measure like the potential trustworthy rating “isn’t going to benefit everybody, but it is a move that adds some clarity to what was a cloudy and disingenuous position from Facebook—that all content should be treated equally,” Ms. Bell said.

Nasties v Deplorables

a8d2303bbf2a33f449ca0e3c1bf9460eI hate Hitler analogies & any reference to World War II as being the perfect example of everything that could ever go right or wrong in the world, but I also believe that right now some deliberate parallels with history are being orchestrated or at least attempted, from “populism” to “fascism.” Specifically, I can’t help but wonder if the focus on race and immigration are a distraction from the implementation of The Total Corporate State. If there is a parallel with fascism to be made, it’s this endgame that is the real goal rather than actual “hate.” But the “hater” thing is what’s got people screaming at each other right now, and it’s no accident. Both sides of this dialectic have agitation as a major goal seems to me. I call it Nasties v Deplorables, with examples Ashley Judd and Milo Yiannopoulos, respectively. These guys and many others are getting people to scream at each other and use language that was absolutely off limits not very long ago. Why? I have a theory.

I had an epiphany when I heard an alt-right blogger say he used to get total flak for the edgy things he said and now everyone’s saying them! And I realized I noticed the same thing. I used to really worry about offending people, not because I said objectively offensive things, but because merely trying to dig into the truth of certain identity-based political hot-buttons are in themselves offensive to some people.
(This is actually a device used to stifle debate. A parallel example occurred today in a Sean Spicer press conference [starting at around 26:40–it’s already teed up below] where someone asked what we were doing in Yemen and he responded repeatedly that to ask such a question disrespected the death of Chief Owens who Spicer said gave his life on a mission in Yemen protecting us from terrorism.)
(As if that aside weren’t off topic enough, you must take a moment to watch Melissa McCarthy do Sean Spicer…she really nails it….)

As did the alt-right blogger, I noticed that what I say is not in the slightest bit edgy anymore and honestly, I was relieved–I started to think maybe I could let my guard down a bit and not worry so much about the occasional misunderstanding–then it hit me!
The Deplorables are being egged on by the Nasties and they are letting their guards down–actually they all are, the Nasties and the Deplorables. Every nasty thing folks say on twitter, facebook, and gab.ai (the Deplorable-friendly answer to twitter which may actually be a honeypot if this is the real game), is being uploaded to the Fusion Centers. (Think I’m kidding? Go to Utah.) Every nasty (or deplorable!) comment is being recorded and catalogued. (Every single tweet is destined for the Library of Congress also, by the way.) Perhaps you think that the overwhelming amount of this data or the extremes to which people like Milo go make us safe by making us look mild. Or that the Nasties are worse so we can always use that as a defense. What I fear, however, is that the pendulum will swing back, the Nasties will be back in charge and just like what actual state-agent Nazis in Germany said and thought, what seemed totally normal, even de rigueur to them in the context of the time, what Deplorables say in the context of this time will be ex post facto criminal speech. (An ex post facto law is an after the fact law and it is against the fundamental principles of just law, but I see fundamental standards such as these slipping away.) I’m not saying what Deplorables say is tantamount to Nazi-talk, I’m just saying, the Nazis and even ordinary citizens actually thought what they were saying was just fine, even cool, in the context of the time, especially since Nazis were the ones in power. (I recall a movie in which a young woman went to a small German town to root out citizens who abided the Nazis. It was actually called The Nasty Girl, if you can believe it.)
I hesitate to even speculate about this–not because I hate Nazi comparisons (which I do)–but because I don’t want to contribute to the Panopticon, which is surely part of the plan (unrolled by what I deem to be a limited hangout, Edward Snowden). That is, by chilling ourselves for fear the watchers are watching, the watchers don’t even have to watch! We will curb ourselves from exercising the First Amendment without them having to lift a finger.
The psyops within psyops, like the disinformation within disinformation, would be enough to make this libertarian go the Full Rothbard (that is, if she hadn’t already)!

#WTWOF: Trump To Terminate Tweets?

this one is fake

but I actually think this one is real

I read an article today in the WSJ about Trump supporters who are on the fence about him now. The article cited two different supporters who expressed concern about Trump’s tweeting. That struck me as odd. That‘s the thing that gives these Trump supporters pause? Also, it didn’t ring true to me, especially since in a recent conversation with one of my sisters she mentioned a few times that Trump’s tweeting is the thing she likes most about him. She feels it’s his end-run around the media and she loves it! It doesn’t get less fake–or more real–than @realDonaldTrump! So my “agenda alert” went off.
Are we being prepared for Trump to withdraw into the confines of the White House, loathe to give press conferences and now reining in the tweets? That’s what I thought at the end of the first article I read this morning. By the end of section A, two more articles–both opinion pieces–called attention to the damage done by Trump’s tweets. More agenda alerts! (Might have to start a hashtag after this!)
This is a bummer. First Trump says no more drain the swamp, then that we should build the wall on spec, now we may lose the twitter feed? I don’t think this administration is going to be nearly as fun as the campaign was 🙁
Here are the articles–all from Section A of the January 19, 2017, Wall Street Journal.
Don’t let the first article’s title–and subtitle–fool you–almost the entire article is about Trump’s use of twitter.
Trump Voters Harbor Mixed Feelings Ahead of Inauguration
Evolving view of president-elect among ambivalent supporters could tip the balance of public opinion

…Ms. Forster, a 52-year-old attorney, voted for Mr. Trump mostly because she didn’t want Democrat Hillary Clinton to win. Now she is nervously watching as he prepares to enter the White House. She likes some of his cabinet picks, but isn’t pleased with his penchant for sending harsh tweets about everything from the U.S. intelligence community to actress Meryl Streep….
Despite complaints from supporters, Mr. Trump shows no sign of giving up his use of Twitter. In a weekend interview with the Times of London, Mr. Trump said, “the tweeting, I thought I’d do less of it, but I’m covered so dishonestly by the press, so dishonestly, that I can put out [on] Twitter” a fast response that is viewed by millions….
As of now, voters generally are giving him the benefit of the doubt. Many are pleased with his cabinet picks, but are uneasy with his attacks on people and broad, often confusing, statements of policy that he circulates on Twitter…
“So far I think he’s doing a decent job,” said Matt Triplett, 47, a Republican salesman in Dublin, Ohio. “But I sure wish he’d get off Twitter. The guy is a loose cannon. I’m going to sit back and be entertained by what’s going to be transpiring. But it’s a little unnerving.”

At least the following article by Karl Rove is honest about wanting Trump off twitter…
A Perfect Sign-Off for @RealDonaldTrump
Now that he’s taking office, he should finally give up his Twitter account.

…Which brings us to Mr. Trump’s Twitter account. What voters tolerated during the campaign now seems inappropriate for a presidential transition and is likely to be thought unacceptable once Mr. Trump takes office. As a candidate, he could punch down at lesser figures and comment carelessly on foreign leaders. But if President Trump continues this in the Oval Office, he will lessen his stature, move markets, poison relationships, and encourage adversaries to make miscalculations.
On this, at least, Americans agree. Fifty-three percent say Mr. Trump’s actions since Election Day have made them “less confident in his ability to serve as president,” according to a Jan. 15 poll by CNN and ORC. More than eight in 10 respondents in a Dec. 5 survey by the Pew Research Center said President Trump “will need to be more cautious about the kinds of things he says and tweets.” Only 15% said that “there is no need for him to change.” The message? End the compulsive tweeting and, especially, the Twitter wars.

This article by Daniel Henninger seems to take a shot at Trump’s twitter for the heck of it…
The Trump Question
Will his presidency produce a new order or merely more disorder?

People seem both amused and unnerved by Mr. Trump’s social-media compulsions. We know that social media disrupts. What else it does at the summit of political power is not clear. One wonders if the hard, daily work by his colleagues to restore world order or a proper constitutional relationship between governing elites and the governed will be hampered by the turbulence of the Twitter storms.

I don’t necessarily think Trump will announce he is shutting down his twitter account but I do believe this is foreshadowing something….#WTWOF #AgendaAlert

Keep Your Googly Eyes on Eric Schmidt 👀

After Hillary vanished into thin air, I put my expectations for Google’s Eric Schmidt in the “What do I do with this now?” file, but when I happened upon a recent video talking about Trump’s meeting with tech giants, including Schmidt, I refiled my views on Schmidt under “same stuff, different day,” and put my article on the subject back under “What to Watch Out For” (#WTWOF)…
Here it is again in case you missed it the first time….

The Censorship Agenda: What To Watch Out For

November 6, 2016
In preparing for The Propaganda Report, I go through my newspapers since the last episode and see what I highlighted. This week, I saw an article I had flagged about Alphabet Inc. Chairman Eric Schmidt. It seemed an innocuous enough article, though it did make the Googlaire seem both altruistic, citing his work with Timshel (more on that later), and ethical–according to “leaked emails” he recommended a competitor over his own company for a project. (Funny how the “leaked emails” can reveal how above-board and well-meaning some people are!)
Here are a few excerpts from the article:
Alphabet’s Eric Schmidt Gave Advice to Clinton Campaign, Leaked Emails Show
The executive backed a startup that helped develop some of the technology behind Mrs. Clinton’s website

Mr. Schmidt in April 2014 backed a startup dubbed Timshel that helped develop some of the technology behind Mrs. Clinton’s campaign website, including functions to sign up supporters and accept donations, according to the emails….
A Timshel spokeswoman said in an email that it develops technology “to help nonprofits, foundations, social entrepreneurs and social-impact organizations build and activate communities.”…
Mr. Schmidt suggested using Amazon Web Services as a cloud provider. Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud service is the chief rival of Google’s cloud product.

I flagged the article because I recalled having investigated Schmidt’s Deep State ties in the past. In reviewing my old research on him, I saw that he was a member of the Trilateral Commission (as was Jeffrey Epstein, the main character in this week’s episode of the Propaganda Report), and a Bilderberger, like Vernon Jordan, the subject of an article I posted this week on Jordan’s positively Orwellian pleading for Big Tech to save us from “unfiltered information.” The weird thing is

This passage appeared in the print version of the article and is not in the online version linked above:

Mr. Trump suggested on Twitter that he saw potential for working with Mr. Schumer who is succeeding sen. Harry Reid as Democratic leader.
“I have always had a good relationship with Chuck Schumer. He is far smarter than Harry Reid and has the ability to get things done. Good News!”

Anti-Trumpers Channel Their Inner Donald
Many who decried Trump now exhibit the worst traits he was accused of.

Since Election Day Americans have seen the trashing of cars and shops that now constitute modern expressions of tolerance. In addition, the flesh-and-blood victims of the Love Trumps Hate beatdowns include a 15-year-old high-school student wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat in Rockville, Md., a 49-year-old Chicago man dragged out of his car, and a 21-year-old Arab-American university student chased down and hit from behind at a Black Lives Matter rally in El Cajon, Calif.
All the while, the president-elect continues his Twitter “rants.” Here are a few of the most recent:
“I have always had a good relationship with Chuck Schumer. He is far smarter than Harry R and has the ability to get things done. Good news!”
“General James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis, who is being considered for Secretary of Defense, was very impressive yesterday. A true General’s General!”
“I settled the Trump University lawsuit for a small fraction of the potential award because as President I have to focus on our country.”
Guess it depends on what you mean by “lashes out.”
