The way that is worded is exactly how it isin the domestic terrorism bill introduced by senator mcsally last week…myfear is: the fbi sets up a sting  getting someone to loosely conspire in a vague plan to attempt destroying property that has the potential to result in injury then they plead guilty for fear of goingto jail for 15 years

Yep, I’m also concerned that they could even take it further than that.  If we accept that “the experts” (FBI, etc.) have methods to predict what a person is planning to do (electronic monitoring, social media posts, behavioral patterns processed through algorithims) and we accept that those techniques are too “sensitive” to disclose lest the bad guys know how to circumvent them, does it remove the burden of the annoying and cumbersome task of ACTUALLY framing people?

@Monica, maybe you could help with this:  If you are categorized as a “terrorist” and “a threat to national security”—how much due process are you entitled to?

Then let me add an interesting wrinkle:  Many messaging platforms/dark web, etc. are based on servers that are located outside of the US.   Might US prosecutors then allege that those using these platforms to “hatch plans”, “stir up unrest”, “spread conspiracies” are doing so as “American terrorists abroad” and therefore not entitled to due process (possibly including being lawfully killed on sight)?

By the way, not to be a nit-picker but, here is an article about one of the “mass shootings” that was “stopped”:

Man said he wanted to kill 100 in mass shooting, Florida cops say

From the article:  “…he doesn’t own any firearms but is “fascinated” with mass shootings.”

That seems to be a pretty friggin’ low bar for “stopping a mass shooting”, no?

I mean at some level, a 16yr old who texted his buddy saying “I’d like to blow up the earth and I’ll do it as soon as I get my hands on a nuclear bomb….” could be arrested for the sake of “stopping a plot to destroy the earth”, right?

Think about it this way, if criminal justice reform goes through and governments continue to relax laws on recreational drugs, they will have to fill the prisons with someone🤷‍♂️

Agreed all the way around – very low bar & it would dovetail with “prison reform”… I noted a little line in the Parkland coverage : why do our tax dollars go to pay for that murderer’s defense?

well – it’s the only “handout” in the Constitution if I recall correctly & that’s because the constitution empowers govt to use your tax money to incarcerate people – it better provide for defense against political persecution or all the safeguards in the bill of rights can be neutralized
